Summary:
Jim Cartwright's story begins just before his eighteenth birthday his senior year in high school. He takes the Voluntary Off World (VOW) assessments, and performs very well on the mental and academic sections of the exams. However, he fails miserably on the physical portions. Just after graduation, he discovers that his mother has made risky financial decisions with the Mercenary Company that he was supposed to inherit upon his majority and then fled Earth and her creditors, leaving Jim with the job of selling off company assets to pay the bills.
